Ultrasound

Ultrasound is a medical imaging technique that uses sound waves and their echoes. Ultrasound has been used in a variety of clinical settings, including:

  • Obstetrics
  • Cardiology
  • Diagnosis of diseases such as cancer
  • Therapeutic applications
  • During medical procedures such as biopsies

Ultrasounds are used to view internal organs as they function (in "real time," like a live TV broadcast), and to assess blood flow through various vessels. Ultrasound procedures are often used to examine many parts of the body such as organs in the abdomen, including the liver, pancreas, gallbladder, spleen, kidneys and bladder, as well as breasts, female pelvis, prostate, scrotum, thyroid and parathyroid glands, and the vascular system. During pregnancy, ultrasounds are performed to evaluate the development of the fetus.

Advantages of Ultrasound

An advantage of ultrasound is that it visualizes certain structures without using radiation, including unborn fetuses, internal organs and tissue, and it can also guide procedures such as biopsies.
